Happy New Year to all my friends/clients, colleagues, readers and visitors. I can’t believe it’s been another year already, hope everyone had a wonderful time with their friends and family during the holiday break, 2010 is here! I've so many new friends through this blog and many of them have/will become collaborators, colleagues and clients of mine. This blog attracts many like-minded people who are both innovative and smart.
My first challenge for the New Year is I need to make sure I don't use 2009 in writing checks. I am sure if happens to many of you too. 2010 seems to be more important than 2009 I don't know why. Many thanks to all readers who contributed to feedbacks and comments and share them on Twitter and Facebooks. It is great to share thoughts with thousands of people everyday across the world. Blogging is now part of my daily routine.
I believe many of you stay up last night, partying, dancing, drinking or gaming or whatever. I sometimes don't understand the logic of staying up on New Year's eve. Someones says an optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in and start thinking of what changes they want to make in the coming year and an pessimist stays up just to make sure the old year leaves. it has a tough year for many.
So do you have a New Year’s resolution? A resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle or career change that is generally interpreted as advantageous or better. New Year is a good time for personal transformation. There's one way to better make sure you act on it, that is to make it public..put it on Facebook etc. Research shows only 12% actually achieved their goals, and when they made their goals public and got support from their friends the number goes up three times. So make sure you share the with your friends on Facebook.
I never see myself as a manager, I sometime hate that word. I see my job has three roles. The number one role is being the head coach and help each one I hire to develop their human and professional potential. I don't waste time on people that I don't believe have potential. Everyone I work with I impose the highest standard, but at the same time making sure they deliver on that. Seeing people grow (in leaps and bound) is the best job satisfaction. I need them to be able to listen, understand their strengths and accept their weaknesses. They need to find their core. Everybody has a core and it"s just a matter of moving around until you"ve discovered what that is. What makes one shines? What makes your heart beat? A core is a combination of something you love a great deal, really good at it and something you can lose yourself in completely -- something that you can start at 8 am, look up from your work and it"s 3 am. Obviously you need to skills andtools in addition to your natural ability to do that very well.
And for my other two roles in additional to being the head coach, the other roles are the master strategist to help our clients and our team to navigate the uncertain future and as an interdisciplinary domain and process specialist between design and strategy. I think I might also have one other role too. Never mind about that. New Year is a good time to ask yourself the question: What is your core? How do you improve on it and optimize and leverage it?
